Project of 2010-13

Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften

Boris Schäfer-Bung and Burkhard Schmidt

In a project presented at the "Long Night of Sciences" (LNdW) in the years 2010-2013, we illustrated the use of random numbers and (Metropolis-Hastings) Monte Carlo methods in applied mathematics and natural sciences. The project involves a classical board game where the players aim at climbing the peak of the Mount Everest. The players can propose moves at will which are, however, accepted only with a certain probability (drawn with the help of a "wheel of fortune") which exponentially decreases with the difference in altitude between initial and final points of the moves.
